Year in Review – Best of 2019 in Queanbeyan-Palerang

What a year it’s been in Queanbeyan-Palerang! To celebrate the end of the year, as well as the decade, we wanted to share a few of the highlights of the year for us at Visit Queanbeyan-Palerang, and hopefully inspire you in your travel plans for the upcoming year with some of our favourite photos from the past year.

The charming historic towns of Braidwood and Bungendore received the attention they deserve when everyone’s favourite NSW travel show, the Sydney Weekender, spent a day in both towns, dedicating air time to many of the local businesses, cafes and restaurants that have been loved by locals for years. Dubbing their trip to Braidwood ‘the ultimate country stay’, Sydney Weekender showcased the best of the food, art, accommodation and historic surrounds the town’s got to offer.

The city of Queanbeyan has also lived through some exciting times the past few months, as the city’s Royal Hotel made headlines when it claimed the title for the best pub steak in the whole of Australia in Yak Brewing’s search for the best pub meals in the country, beating 1,889 venues with their mouthwatering meal. The city also got a new player in town when the brand new Campbell & George opened its doors in late November, receiving a warm welcome from locals who now flock to the club for good food, cold drinks and a bit of a bowl with friends old and new.

In addition, the emerging wine region of Queanbeyan-Palerang was acknowledged by the industry with Contentious Character’s recent commendation for Wineries, Breweries & Distilleries at the reputable Canberra Region Tourism Awards 2019. Summerhill Road Vineyard and Lake George Winery’s very own Sarah McDougall also took home an award this year, when she was awarded the coveted Owner/Operator of the Year Award at the 2019 Australian Women in Wine Awards, held in New York. The year also saw the launch of the brand new family owned venture, Norton Road Wines, and the recent opening of the highly anticipated Sapling Yard pop-up cellar door at Braidwood’s Provision’s Deli & Grocery.

The past year was an extremely fruitful one for the region’s produce market scene, which has been booming with a new addition to the region’s farmers markets starting up in the beautiful country village of Nerriga.

Families travelling between Canberra and the coast were thrilled to see Braidwood’s Ryrie Park playground go through a major revamp, incorporating fantastic new features such as a slide topped with a windmill, a flying fox, a nature play area and a bike path for the youngest of the family to enjoy while taking a much needed break for a play and a pie in the historic town.
