Show your Aussie spirit and dedicate the long weekend to supporting fire, drought and road closure affected communities. The local businesses in Braidwood and Bungendore are kick-starting the journey to recovery with a variety of fun-filled events for a great cause.
From retail trails and fabulous feeds to good old fashioned pub crawls, here are three ways to support local communities this Australia Day long weekend.
Explore Braidwood trails and win
The iconic rural town of Braidwood has truly had its resilience tested in the last few months but the town still stands strong. With the Kings Highway now reopened, Braidwood is welcoming visitors back into town. Showcasing everything the town’s got to offer from arts & crafts to antiques and food, the Braidwood Business Chamber has organised a weekend-long event to support the local community of small business owners.
The weekend includes a busking competition, a scavenger hunt for kids and shopping trails to explore, covering several categories that are characteristic to the town’s identity, including arts & crafts, antiques, food and fashion. Grab a card from Braidwood’s Visitor Information Centre to collect stamps from purchases made on the day. Once you have 10 stamps, you’ll go in the draw to win a gift basket full of Braidwood goodies.
For more information on the event, visit their website.
Wine & Dine at Contentious Character’s Australia Day Fundraiser

Enjoy music from The Advocates while indulging in a special Australia Day menu of the finest food in the region, including Contentious Character’s take on a Mint Slice, Cherry Ripe and Golden Gaytime.
Tickets for the event are $15pp with all proceeds going to the Wamboin Rural Fire Brigade. Book your seat for the restaurant, lawn or deck dining on their website and you’ll be all set for an evening of great food and sweet summer sounds.
Spend a day out in Bungendore
If you’re spending the weekend in the region, don’t forget to show some love to the Bungendore businesses as well. Start the day with a light breakfast at one of Bungendore’s charming cafés, such as the Gathering or the Big Green Cup, and explore the town on foot to find more unique businesses brimming with antiques, handmade jewellery and fashion.
Savour the flavours of local produce at the George Bar & Dining’s Australia Day Sunday Session with local music legend Mitch Canas and take part in Bungendore Royal Hotel’s Australia Day RFS Fundraiser. Complete with great food, live music, yabby races and cash prizes, the Royal Hotel is donating all proceeds from the day to RFS NSW.
